Rikolto East Africa is part of the Rikolto network, an international NGO with over 40 years of experience working with farmer organizations and food chain actors across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Rikolto’s objective is to help family farmers establish a thriving, sustainable, and inclusive agricultural sector by producing high-quality goods for their own consumption and a variety of markets (national, regional, and worldwide). Rikolto is currently implementing a food systems programme in eight regions of Tanzania’s Northern and Southern Highlands, primarily through three programmes focusing on transforming urban food systems (Good Food for Cities), sustainable rice for all, and livelihoods through the cocoa/coffee program.
Rikolto in Tanzania has received financing from the Belgian Directorate for Development Cooperation (DGD) to implement the Good Food for Cities (GF4C) programme’s 2022-2026 strategy. The program’s goal is to help farmers earn a sustainable income and provide access to good and nutritious food for all Mbeya City residents. This program is co-financed by numerous projects, including ‘Building Inclusive and Competitive Horticulture Businesses in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands’, Norad supported through AGRA (Grow Together), Accelerated Innovation Delivery Initiative (AID-I), and others. As a result, the chosen applicant will be expected to work closely with the project managers and the overall project coordinator in the Southern Highlands to achieve alignment and synergies.
Job purpose
To encourage smallholder farmers’ inclusion in sustainable and fair-trade relationships with private firms in national, regional, and export markets, as well as universal access to healthful and nutritious food, by stimulating collective action to address food system concerns.
Responsibilities:
- A conducive climate for urban food systems is fostered.
- Encourage financial institutions, in partnership with the program team, to invest in food-related SMEs.
- Monitor and document the processes of change/innovation in business models, changes in behavior at the enterprise level, and the outcomes in terms of enhancing the livelihoods of smallholders and young entrepreneurs, as well as learning from them.
- Facilitate experience sharing at all levels.
- Reporting, advocating, and documenting program evidence.
- An Inclusive Approach to Food Systems
- Facilitate multi-stakeholder interaction in Mbeya city to address food system concerns and provide access to safe and nutritious food for all consumer groups.

- Innovative pilots contribute to the desirable intended structural changes and business models.
- Strong business ties between FBOs and private corporations.
- FBOs possess a strong entrepreneurial mentality, abilities, and capacities.

Education and Experience:
- Masters degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Economics, Business, or Cooperative Development.
- At least 5 years of experience developing value chains for horticulture or high-value crops with a diverse range of partners.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strategic thinker who can perceive challenges from multiple perspectives.
- Focused on outcomes
- Clearly communicates in a range of venues and styles, with good networking abilities.
- A thorough understanding of value chain development methodologies, including gender empowerment approaches.
- Knowledge and comprehension of food safety standards, certifications, and quality management systems.
- Detailed understanding and development of sustainable non-financial (BDS development) and financial services, including market information systems.
- Extensive expertise dealing with FBOs and facilitating collective action (including marketing where appropriate).
- Proven track record of creating FBO and SME business concepts and plans.
- Good awareness of sustainability/environmental issues and the capacity to interpret the information for stakeholders.
- Understands the national, regional, and worldwide market dynamics for high-value crops and grains.
